About the service

Idioma is a Terminal 400 public facility for translating text between Portuguese, English, French and Spanish.

/01The text never leaves the device

Translation happens on the device itself. What you type is not sent to any server: not to the Terminal, not to anyone. No account, no tracking, no ads.

The internet is only used to download, once, the models for each language pair, served by the Terminal itself.

/02How it translates

In Chrome on a computer, Idioma uses the translator built into the browser. In every other browser, the iPhone included, it uses Bergamot: Firefox's translation engine, running in WebAssembly.

The models link each language to English. Between Portuguese, French and Spanish, the translation changes lines at English, like a transfer.

/03Offline

Once the models are downloaded, Idioma translates without the internet. From the browser's menu, use Install app or Add to Home Screen to keep it as an app; on the iPhone, that also keeps the system from deleting the models.

/04Limits

It's machine translation: good for understanding and being understood, not for official documents. Long texts take a few seconds; translations between two languages other than English are a little slower and less precise.
